Fall Break Is Coming. Here's How to Not Lose the Ground You Gained.

The routine is finally holding. Mornings are manageable. Your kid knows what's expected. And then fall break shows up and takes a week out of the middle of it.
You've been through this. You know how hard it can be to rebuild after a break.
This time, you can get ahead of it.
Why breaks are harder for some kids than others
For most children a break from school is just a break. For kids who rely on structure to regulate themselves, it's a disruption of the system that's holding them together.
The school routine provides external scaffolding. When that disappears, even for a week, some kids have nothing to replace it. Sleep shifts. Behavior loosens. And the Monday they go back can feel like the first week of school all over again.
How to hold the routine through the break
You don't need a school-day schedule. You need enough structure that their body knows what to expect.
Same wake time, or within 30 minutes of it. Meals at consistent times. A wind-down before bed that matches what you do on school nights.
Build something into each day they can look forward to. Not screen time all day. One real thing. An outing, a project, a friend, anything that gives the day a shape.
Going back after break
The Sunday before school returns is often the hardest day of the whole break. If you see the anxiety building, name it. I know going back can feel like a lot. That's usually enough to take the edge off.
If transitions always wreck your family
Some kids fall apart at every transition point, every break, every change in the schedule. That pattern is worth addressing directly.
