What Grandma Sees That Everybody Else Misses

She's been watching him since August.

Not the way a teacher watches. Not the way a counselor watches with a clipboard and a checklist. The way a grandmother watches. Quietly. From the kitchen. From across the living room. From the front porch of the complex while he's out there doing nothing in particular.

She notices the things that don't show up in a report card. That he stopped laughing at the same things. That he eats faster now, like he's trying to be done and gone. That when his mother calls on Sundays he goes to his room to talk instead of staying in the living room like he used to.

Nobody else has said anything. The school sent home a progress report that said he was doing fine. His mom thinks he's just adjusting.

Grandma knows the difference between adjusting and disappearing.

She's not a therapist. She doesn't have the words for what she's seeing. But she's been watching this child his whole life and something is different and she knows it the way you know weather is changing before it changes.

That instinct is worth trusting.
