Two Months Into the School Year and You're Already Running Low

September felt manageable. October is a different story.
The novelty of the new year is long gone. The daily grind is fully set in. You're managing homework, behavior, school communication, and everything else your life requires. And you're doing it while running on less than you started with.
This is usually when parent burnout quietly arrives.
What fall burnout feels like
It doesn't always feel dramatic. It's more like a low-grade flatness. Getting through the day without much patience left. Dreading the after-school hours before they've even started. Feeling guilty about how you handled something, then doing it again the next day.
You love your kid. And you are tired.
Why this matters for your child
Parents who are burned out have less capacity to regulate their own responses, which means the hard moments at home escalate faster and take longer to recover from. Your wellbeing is not separate from your child's. They're connected.
This isn't blame. It's just true. Taking care of yourself is part of taking care of them.
What to actually do about it
Tell someone. Not performing fine when you're not is one of the more useful things you can do.
Identify one thing in your week that belongs to you. Not a chore. Something that gives back instead of takes.
And if your child's behavioral or emotional needs are what's draining you, getting support for them directly reduces the load on you.
