When Your Kid Comes Home From School and Shuts Down

The car ride home is always the same now.

She picks him up at 3:15. He gets in, drops the backpack on the floor, puts in his earbuds. She asks how school was. He says fine. She asks what they did. He shrugs.

By the time they pull into the parking lot at their complex he's already halfway to his room in his head.

What's actually happening

School is a long day of holding it together. For kids who struggle socially or with focus, the school day takes everything they have. Managing friendships. Keeping up. Sitting still when something feels wrong. By the time they walk out the door, there's nothing left.

The shutdown isn't attitude. It's a kid who spent all day keeping it together and now needs to decompress before he can be a person again.

It doesn't look like that from the outside. It looks like a kid who doesn't want to talk to his mom.

What actually helps

Give him 30 minutes before asking anything. No debrief, no homework talk. Just let him land.

After that, low-key works better than direct. Sitting nearby while you do something else. A snack on the counter without a conversation attached. Kids who are depleted open up sideways. When the pressure is off.

When the shutdown is more than tired

Some kids come home unreachable every single day for weeks. If that's been the pattern, it's worth paying attention to.
