School Started. Things Aren't Better. Now What?

A lot of parents spent summer hoping that going back to school would help. The routine. The structure. The break from being home all day. They told themselves let's just get to September and see.

September is here.

And if things aren't better, it's okay to say that. It doesn't mean you failed. It means your child needs more than a new school year can give them on its own.

About 1 in 3 teens is dealing with a mental, emotional, or behavioral condition. Of the ones who need support, 6 in 10 never get it. Not because it isn't available. Because families don't know where to start.

Why school doesn't fix underlying struggles

Structure helps most kids. But structure alone doesn't resolve what's underneath a behavioral health challenge.

A child who struggles with emotional regulation is still going to struggle when they're frustrated in the classroom. A teen who's been withdrawn and low all summer is still going to feel that way when the bell rings. The school year changes the container. It doesn't change what the kid is carrying.

What this moment usually looks like

You're tired. You've tried different approaches. You've had the same conversations multiple times. You're not sure what you're missing or what else there is to try.

That's not a parenting problem. That's a situation that needs outside support.

What getting support actually means for your family

It doesn't mean something is seriously wrong. It means your child has needs that go beyond what a parent or a school can address alone, and there are people trained to help with exactly that.
