When Your Kid Starts Saying Their Stomach Hurts Every Morning

It started once or twice. Now it's almost every day. Monday is the worst. Sometimes it clears up. Sometimes they stay home.
You've taken them to the doctor. Nothing is wrong.
Which means something else is going on.
What recurring stomachaches before school usually mean
The body and the brain are connected more directly than most people think. When a child is anxious or dreading something, that stress has to go somewhere physical. For a lot of kids it lands in the stomach.
This isn't made up. The pain is real. The stomach is genuinely responding to stress. But the source isn't physical and a doctor isn't going to fix it.
What the stomachache is usually protecting them from
School. Specifically, something about school that feels hard or threatening enough that their body is trying to help them avoid it.
It might be social. A friendship that's fallen apart. Feeling left out. Someone giving them a hard time.
It might be academic. A class that's gotten harder than they can manage. A teacher interaction that went badly.
It might be the general weight of holding it together all day. Some kids don't have a specific reason. They're just tapped out.
How to figure out what's underneath it
Don't interrogate. The direct what's going on at school question usually gets nothing.
Try the side door. What's the part of the day you mind least. Who's the one person you look forward to seeing. If you could skip one thing tomorrow what would it be.
Those questions get more honest answers and give you something to work with.
If this has been going on for weeks
School avoidance that builds over time doesn't resolve on its own. It tends to deepen.
