The First Quarter Is Almost Over. How Is Your Kid Actually Doing?

Quarter one ends in most Fort Worth schools over the next few weeks. Grades come home. Teachers send updates.
That's one picture. But it's not the whole picture.
What grades don't tell you
A kid can be pulling passing grades and still be running on empty. Grades measure output. They don't measure the cost of producing that output.
If your child is holding it together academically but coming home wrecked every day, fighting you every night, or dreading school in a way that's getting worse, something is still worth paying attention to.
What to actually look at right now
How are mornings? Mornings are one of the most reliable indicators of how a child feels about school. A kid who is genuinely fine doesn't dread every morning.
How are they sleeping? Disrupted sleep in the middle of a school week usually means something is stressful enough to follow them into the night.
What does their mood look like on Sunday? Sunday evening dread that's consistent is your kid telling you something about how they feel about what's coming.
What the first quarter is actually for
It's a diagnostic. It tells you what the year is going to look like if nothing changes.
If the first quarter has been hard, the second quarter rarely fixes itself. The kids who struggle in fall tend to struggle harder in winter, when the days are shorter, the work gets heavier, and the novelty of the year is fully gone.
If you're looking at the first quarter and seeing a pattern
Getting support in place now, between quarters, is one of the most effective things you can do.
