How to Start Talking About Back to School Without a Meltdown

Bring it up too early and your kid shuts down. Wait too long and the transition hits them out of nowhere. Most parents aren't sure exactly when or how to start the conversation.
There's no perfect answer. But there's a better way to start.
Why the topic itself triggers a reaction
For a lot of kids, school isn't just school. It's early mornings. Expectations. Social pressure. Sitting still. Having to hold it together all day.
For kids who had a hard school year, the mention of August can feel like a threat. Their reaction isn't dramatic. It's a completely reasonable response to something they're already dreading.
How to bring it up without blowing it up
Don't announce it. Don't sit them down. Don't make it a conversation about getting back on track.
Just mention something small and specific. A teacher they liked. A friend they'll see. Something they were good at.
You're not trying to get them excited. You're just keeping the door open.
Build toward it slowly
Start shifting the schedule now. Not all at once. Just nudge bedtime back by 15 minutes. Get up slightly earlier a few days a week.
Ask what they want the year to look like. Not what you want. What they want. That small shift in framing changes how kids engage with the whole idea.
If your child's anxiety about school is already significant
Some kids aren't just nervous. They're already in full avoidance mode and school hasn't even started yet. If that's where you are, getting some support now is a lot easier than waiting until the first week falls apart.
